ALFRED HOOK LECTURE/RECITAL
given by
Terry Riley
Programme:
Terry Riley:
Solo and improvised piano works
There are few people in the world who can claim to have started an entire musical genre, but American composer Terry Riley's seminal work In C became a revolutionary classic, launching musical minimalism. Riley's hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, brightly orchestrated eastern flavoured improvisations and compositions set the stage for the prevailing interest in a New Tonality. The influences of Riley's music have been heard in the works of prominent composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Adams and in the music of rock groups such as The Who, The Soft Machine, Tangerine Dream, Curved Air and many others. In this solo recital Terry Riley will discuss and present some of his recent solo piano music.
